- Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, a 34-year-old professional footballer, admitted to organizing the smuggling of 60 kilograms of cannabis into the UK in 2024.
- He enlisted the help of two women to transport cannabis from Thailand, which they mistakenly thought was gold, with the smuggling taking place between July and September 2024.
- Emmanuel-Thomas was arrested in September 2024 while playing for Scottish side Greenock Morton, who immediately terminated his six-month contract signed in July.
- The seized cannabis, worth around $800,000 , was found in two suitcases at Stansted Airport, and the maximum UK sentence for importation is up to 14 years in prison.
- The National Crime Agency highlighted that organized crime groups profit significantly from trafficking cannabis legally grown abroad but illegally sold in the UK, with sentencing pending for Emmanuel-Thomas.
