Ex-Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Is Mentally Fit for Sex Trafficking Trial, Judge Says
The judge said Jeffries can understand the case and help his lawyers, clearing the way for an October trial on sex trafficking charges.
- On Friday, District Judge Nusrat Choudhury ruled that former Abercrombie chief executive Michael Jeffries is mentally competent to stand trial on sex trafficking and interstate prostitution charges.
- Jeffries' defense team had argued his cognitive issues from Alzheimer and Lewy were "progressive and incurable," prompting Choudhury to order hospitalization at Butner, North Carolina, to assess his condition.
- In a 157-page opinion, Choudhury concluded Jeffries "clearly possesses a rational and factual understanding of the proceedings," citing strong communication skills and ability to recall information and engage in critical thinking.
- To accommodate Jeffries, Choudhury will conduct the trial from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, allowing him time to review testimony before his October trial in Central Islip.
- Jeffries, currently on $10 million bond, faces trial alongside co-defendants Matthew Smith and James Jacobson, with prosecutors alleging the group lured men to drug-fueled sex parties in New York and the Hamptons.
