As the Mid-Autumn Festival approaches, the traditional bakeries of the Chinese community in Ho Chi Minh City are once again bustling with activity. Some shops have been around for nearly 80 years, while others have been making mooncakes using family recipes for over half a century. Every Mid-Autumn Festival, regular customers return not only to buy mooncakes but also to rediscover a part of their memories.
Phuong Diem Thuan bakery in Ho Chi Minh City produces about 1,000 mooncakes a day, but they often run out of stock. Near the Mid-Autumn Festival, each customer is limited to a maximum of 3 boxes, and some people have to return multiple times.
Over 80 years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Phuong Trien Phong came to the Saigon-Gia Dinh area and made their first cakes to earn a living. It wasn't until the 1980s that Mr. Phong showed a talent for baking and was given formal training by his family, thus beginning a journey of over 40 years building and continuing the baking business through three generations.
