Evacuations ordered in South L.A. due to illegal fireworks
Police said at least 17 people were hurt and 22 homes, 13 businesses and 37 vehicles were damaged after the fireworks explosion.
On Wednesday, the Los Angeles Police Department discovered a massive cache of illegal fireworks while serving a domestic violence warrant at a residence in South Los Angeles.
Detectives found every room in the 100 block of East 85th Street residence stacked with boxes of pyrotechnics while executing the warrant, prompting immediate safety concerns.
Los Angeles Police Department Deputy Chief of Operations-South Bureau Marc Reina confirmed crews filled five box trucks with the fireworks, estimated between $150,000 and $200,000.
Evacuations in the surrounding area near 85th Street were ordered temporarily but scaled back by Wednesday afternoon after authorities cleared the hazardous explosives.
This discovery follows a 2021 incident where the Los Angeles Police Department botched a fireworks detonation on 27th Street, injuring 17 people and costing over $21 million in settlements.
