Lower Young Creek Wildfire Near Keremeos Now 'Being Held'
NEAR PRINCETON, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA, JUL 14 – The evacuation order near Princeton was downgraded after conditions improved, allowing nearly 30 properties' residents to return despite the August Lake wildfire remaining out of control.
- The Lower Young Creek wildfire ignited on Friday, June 27, 2025, near the 28.5-kilometre mark of Ashnola Road, approximately 30 kilometres from Keremeos, and has since consumed an area of about 50 hectares.
- The fire expanded rapidly but is currently considered contained by BC Wildfire Crews, given the existing fuel conditions, weather, and resources deployed, while the investigation into its cause continues.
- Approximately 34 firefighters, three helicopters, and heavy equipment continue to work with ground and aerial resources focused on hot spot areas amid road closures on Ashnola Road.
- Cassidy Martin explained that the increase of the fire from 15 to 50 hectares was not caused by rapid expansion and added that using water drops to reduce the fire’s intensity allows firefighters to approach more safely and tackle active hotspots.
- Evacuation alerts remain in place for Cathedral Lake Lodge and nearby campsites, with officials urging continued vigilance and the use of BC Wildfire Service resources and updates.
