About 7,000 Residents in La Ronge, Sask., Area Can Go Home Thursday

  • Starting at 8 a.m. on Thursday, June 12, approximately 7,000 people from the communities of La Ronge, Air Ronge, and those belonging to the Lac La Ronge Indian Band were permitted to return to their homes following the removal of the wildfire evacuation order.
  • The evacuation followed the rapid advance of the PISEW wildfire on June 2 from the west, which breached La Ronge and caused the evacuation of multiple communities.
  • Favorable weather and rain in recent days helped crews contain the wildfire, enabling emergency officials to rescind the evacuation order and begin a phased community return.
  • Lyle Hannan explained that individuals identified as essential workers will be permitted to return earlier, and Chief Tammy Cook-Searson noted that efforts are currently in progress to ensure community members return home gradually and safely.
  • The return process will be phased through June 12-15 with fuel assistance and transportation support available, while power outages due to fire-damaged infrastructure continue in some nearby communities until Saturday.
