Madeleine the Boring Machine Poised to Build HS2 Tunnel in London
The first tunnel boring machine named Madeleine began a 4.5-mile excavation to Euston, with the TBM expected to take 18 months amid funding and timeline uncertainties.
- On January 27, Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister Darren Jones and Rail Minister Lord Hendy switched on the first tunnel boring machine, starting tunnelling from Old Oak Common toward Euston.
- The Euston site has been mothballed since March 2023 due to funding doubts, with the yet-to-be-established Euston Delivery Company exploring private finance for redevelopment.
- A 1,624-tonne tunnel boring machine will excavate and simultaneously line the tunnel by slotting concrete segments into place, while a companion TBM will be launched in the coming months.
- Camden council estimates the Euston redevelopment could add around £41 billion to the UK economy by 2053 and support 34,000 jobs, while the HS2 workforce includes more than 33,000 people.
- A revised cost and schedule will be published this year after a comprehensive programme review by Mark Wild, with HS2 Ltd estimating the London–Birmingham line could cost up to £66 billion.
