European Parliament Opens EU-Values Review of ESN
Lawmakers approved a review that could strip the far-right group of about €2 million in EU funding, officials said.
- On Tuesday, the European Parliament voted 414–224 to request that the Authority for European Political Parties and Foundations verify whether the Europe of Sovereign Nations complies with core EU values required for party registration.
- APPF director Pascal Schonard submitted a 300-page dossier detailing 26 incidents of alleged racist, homophobic, and antisemitic statements by ESN members, citing court rulings and social media posts as evidence.
- Lawmakers acted after ESN members, including those from the Alternative for Germany , were accused of chanting "send them back" following last month's deportation regulation vote, prompting the Greens/EFA Group to table the motion.
- German Greens/EFA MEP Daniel Freund estimates the review could strip ESN of roughly €2 million in 2026 funding, arguing that "those who incite hatred" should not receive taxpayer money.
- ESN co-chair René Aust denounced the vote as an "attack on democratic principles," while this marks the first time the verification procedure has been triggered since the regulation's October 2025 revision.
