Intelligence officials worry a sabotage campaign blamed on Russia is growing more dangerous
EUROPE, JUL 09 – European officials report over 70 incidents linked to Russia since 2022, including arson, sabotage, and cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure and military sites.
- On Tuesday, a court in the UK convicted three men of arson linked to a March 2024 scheme targeting a warehouse in east London that stored supplies destined for Ukraine.
- The plot was orchestrated by Russian intelligence as part of a broader campaign of disruption across Europe following Moscow's military action in Ukraine that began in early 2022.
- The fire destroyed about half of the warehouse, which housed mail order items including StarLink devices used by Ukraine's military, and involved recruits guided by a Russian handler communicating via Telegram.
- Officials documented 12 arson or sabotage incidents last year and two in 2023, with a Russian recruiter calling Earl “our dagger in Europe” and urging attacks on more Ukraine-linked businesses.
- The growing sabotage campaign risks more violence as European intelligence officials warn Moscow increasingly relies on amateurs for operations, while the Kremlin denies all allegations of sabotage involvement.
