The exports of two of Ukraine’s biggest export earners, corn and metal, are falling, which will squeeze the already cash strapped government and make a €20bn trade deficit with the EU worse in 2025.

On May 22, the European Commission adopted a list of transitional measures for Ukrainian exports to the EU, which will come into force after autonomous trade preferences for Ukraine, known as “trade visa-free”, cease to operate from June 6.

After the end of EU free trade with Ukraine, agricultural products such as grain, pork, beef, milk powder, eggs and poultry will be subject to tariffs and quotas from before the full-scale Russian invasion. On June 6, the regulation that exempted Ukraine from tariffs and quotas will expire.
