Europe Risks Missing Target to Eliminate Viral Hepatitis by 2030
Deaths fell 9.3% from 2022, but Eurostat said uneven prevention leaves Europe off track to meet its 2030 elimination goal.
- On Tuesday, World Hepatitis Day, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control reported that Europe is off track to meet 2030 elimination targets despite steady progress in preventing new infections.
- Uneven implementation of key prevention measures hinders progress; only nine of 25 countries reached the WHO target of fully vaccinating 95% of children against hepatitis B, with some nations reporting coverage declines in recent years.
- While 3,172 deaths from viral hepatitis occurred in 2023, an estimated five million people in the EU/EEA live with chronic infections, and only seven countries meet WHO targets for distributing sterile injection equipment.
- "No one should die from a disease that is preventable, diagnosable and treatable," said Bruno Ciancio, Head of Unit for Directly Transmitted and Vaccine-Preventable Diseases at ECDC, noting millions remain unaware of chronic infections.
- Improving healthcare in community and prison settings remains critical to reducing transmission, as the region must ensure life-saving interventions reach everyone who needs them to eliminate hepatitis as a public health threat.
