Europe expands AI computing network with €390 million order from France’s Bull
The contract expands Europe’s publicly funded AI network and is designed to deliver about 10 times the AI capacity of the existing LUMI system.
- On Monday, EuroHPC Joint Undertaking selected French state-owned Bull to build the €387.8 million LUMI-AI supercomputer in Finland, marking the sixth machine ordered under the AI Factories programme.
- This contract represents Bull's largest ever, following the French state's purchase of the business from Atos five months ago. Government ownership of a major supercomputer manufacturer would have been unusual three years ago.
- Funding is split equally between EuroHPC and a consortium including Finland, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Norway, and Poland. The machine will use AMD Instinct MI430X accelerators and EPYC processors to deliver ten times the existing LUMI capacity.
- While the system features storage by IBM and networking by Nokia, it relies on American-designed AMD chips at its core. This mix captures Europe's progress toward technological sovereignty while underscoring dependencies on foreign suppliers.
- Deployment is scheduled for the second half of 2027, when the system will run AI training and inference alongside scientific simulations. The real test will be translating the European infrastructure strategy into usable computing capacity.
