ECB’s Piero Cipollone Warns on Tokenization Fragmentation Sans Digital Euro
A ECB executive board member said the potential introduction of a digital euro ”would not to take over the role of banks,” but ensure they have a role in the EU’s monetary system.
Piero Cipollone, member of the Executive Board of the European Central Bank, warned that the absence of a pan-European digital solution could open up space for disconnected platforms and weaken Europe’s resilience and monetary sovereignty. The ECB has not yet decided whether to issue a digital euro, although the project is still in preparation and its timetable envisages 2029 as a possible launch date.
