The US-based news organization Politico reported that the European Union (EU) has warned Türkiye about plastic waste management. It stated that shipments of plastic waste could be suspended due to a "serious pollution problem" in Türkiye.
While discussions continue regarding the quantity and recycling rates of plastic waste sent from Europe to Turkey, the EU Commission has not decided to halt shipments. New EU rules, however, foresee stricter controls on plastic waste exports to OECD countries like Turkey in the coming period.
The European Commission (EC) will consider banning the export of plastic waste to Turkey if the country fails to address pollution and environmental problems, a European Commission official said.
