EU's Kallas to Visit Islamabad on June 1
The visit will include talks on trade and the GSP+ framework as the EU reviews Pakistan’s progress on 27 international conventions.
- On Monday, June 1, European Union High Representative Kaja Kallas will visit Islamabad for the eighth EU-Pakistan Strategic Dialogue, co-chaired with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
- The Strategic Engagement Plan, signed in June 2019, serves as the institutional framework for this dialogue, enabling both sides to assess bilateral relations and advance cooperation across political and economic sectors.
- Pakistani textile exports surged 108 per cent since the EU granted GSP+ status in 2014, a special incentive requiring countries to "pursue sustainable development and good governance."
- Beyond the dialogue, Kallas is scheduled to hold meetings with President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of the Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir.
- EU Ambassador to Pakistan Raimundas Karoblis noted last November that the country needs to "do better" on minority rights and blasphemy, though the EU has recognized progress on the death penalty and the Commission on Minorities.
