EU to take part in Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’ but not as member

  • This week in Washington the European Commission will take part in US President Donald Trump's `Board of Peace` inaugural meeting, but Brussels will not join as a member, with Dubravka Suica representing the EU Thursday.
  • The EU is participating as part of its long-standing commitment to implement the Gaza ceasefire and support reconstruction, having contributed 1.65 billion euros since October 7, 2023.
  • EU spokesman Anouar El Anouni warned, `We still have a number of questions regarding several elements in the Board of Peace: one concerning its scope, two concerning its governance, and three, its compatibility with the UN Charter,` while Brussels raised concerns about the Board's expanding remit.
  • Only two EU member states — Hungary and Bulgaria — accepted invitations to sit as members, and Hungary's Viktor Orbán will join Thursday's meeting while Italy, Romania and Cyprus confirmed observer participation, with Romania's President Nicușor Dan saying on Sunday he will travel to Washington.
  • The EU has not accepted membership but is expected to be granted observer status, as the Board of Peace's charter raises concerns over indefinite chairmanship and Putin's inclusion.
