The European Parliament (EP) on Tuesday approved a ban on the marketing of plant-based foods using terms such as "steak" or "bacon." However, vegetarian "burgers" will continue to be sold.
Vegan burgers and sausages are staying, and MEPs aim to enable consumers to make informed choices.
For a long time, the EU Parliament has been calling for vegan sausages and other substitute products for fans of meat-free food – and has now made a decision.
Vegetarian substitutes may for the time being continue to bear common names such as veggie burgers or soy chips in the EU.
MEPs voted in favour of banning the use of meat-related terms such as steak or bacon for plant-based foods, while terms such as veggie burger or vegan sausage will continue to be allowed.
A "veggie burger" name ban is off the table. Some other names are supposed to disappear from menus in the EU.
