EU suspends Brazilian meat imports over antibiotic compliance concerns
- Starting Thursday, the European Union will suspend imports of Brazilian meat and animal products, a Commission spokeswoman told AFP on Monday. Brazil is no longer authorized to export these products to the Union.
- The European Commission alleges Brazil failed to provide sufficient guarantees that exports meet standards restricting antimicrobial use in livestock. An audit of Brazil's poultry and honey sectors is due to conclude on Friday.
- Brazil served as the Union's second-largest beef supplier in 2025, exporting more than 92,000 tonnes worth over 713 million euros. The Commission noted Brazil remains an important partner and exports could resume once compliance is demonstrated.
- Farmer Carlos Roberto dos Santos from the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo conceded that "a European farmer has no way to compete with me." He warned that importing cheap meat will destroy the local farming sector.
- The Brazilian government has not responded to the announcement, though it stated in May that it would "quickly" act to reverse the suspension. Brussels declined to provide a timeline for when trade might resume.

The European Union is suspending imports of poultrymeat and beef from Brazil, as well as eggs and honey from Thursday, and the decision comes after the European Commission has requested additional guarantees on compliance with European rules on the use of antibiotics in animal husbandry.
The ban on Brazilian beef was confirmed by the office of the European Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare, Oliver Varhelyi, as described by Irish MEP Ciaran Mullooly on social networks and also to the Irish press.
The European Commission suspects that the South American country is not complying with EU rules against the misuse of antibiotics in livestock production.
