EU is set to propose ban on social media and AI chatbots for under-15s
The draft would add age checks, parental controls and safer design rules for social platforms, video games and AI chatbots, officials said.
- On Thursday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU tech chief Henna Virkkunen will present the "EU Kids Act," restricting children under 15 from social media, video sharing, AI chatbots, and online games.
- Mounting global concerns about platforms like Meta's Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Google's YouTube, and ChatGPT harming children's safety prompted the initiative. The Union stated it "needs to limit the access of tech companies to our children, and not the other way around."
- Under the proposal, under-3s receive no access, while children aged 3 to 12 require full parental control for child-friendly services. Users 13 to 14 may request limited introductory accounts; those 15 and older manage their own profiles.
- Platforms must verify age for new accounts and provide tools enabling children to report harmful content. COMPANIES will also pay supervisory fees to fund enforcement while avoiding addictive designs and harmful feeds.
- The Commission must negotiate the draft with EU countries and the European Parliament in the coming months before it becomes law. Details may still change ahead of the announcement.
