EU unveils AI code of practice to help businesses comply with bloc’s rules
EUROPEAN UNION, JUL 10 – The voluntary code offers AI developers a framework emphasizing transparency, copyright protection, and safety to ease compliance with the EU AI Act before its 2025 enforcement deadline.
- The European Union has released a draft Code of Practice for general-purpose AI models, linked to the AI Act effective August 2, 2025.
- Under the AI Act enacted August 1, 2024, the code’s finalization was required by May 2, 2025, and the Commission received it on July 10, 2025.
- A three-chapter framework requires providers to maintain records of training data provenance, computational resources, and energy consumption, with safety measures for systemic GPAI models exceeding 10^25 FLOP.
- Voluntary adoption means signatories gain a “clear, collaborative route” to compliance, said EU tech chief Henna Virkkunen, providing legal certainty during the transition.
- Existing model providers have until August 2, 2027 to comply, as GPAI rules become enforceable by August 2, 2025, but enforcement starts in August 2026, and the EU will assess the code in coming weeks.
