EU parliament adopts curbs on plastic pellet pollution
- On Thursday, October 23, 2025, the European Parliament adopted rules clamping down on plastic pellet pollution, holding handling and transport firms accountable for spills.
- European Commission data show up to 180,000 tonnes of plastic pellets from fossil fuels spill yearly into beaches and oceans across the 27-nation bloc due to mishandling.
- Transport companies must act quickly to report and contain pellet leaks, estimate spilled microplastics within 30 days, and handle clean-up where necessary.
- Land freight companies have two years to comply, with maritime freight three years, despite some EU countries' push to exclude it, said César Luena, who shepherded the legislation.
- The rules apply to all companies transporting more than 5 tonnes of microplastics per year within the European Union, and all firms involved in the manufacture, transport or transformation of pellets must carry out risk assessments to prevent spills and clean up if they occur.
