EU Must Stop Funding Controversial NGOs
BRUSSELS, BELGIUM, JUL 15 – EU foreign ministers rejected 10 proposed measures including sanctions and arms embargoes despite evidence of Israel's violations under the EU-Israel Association Agreement, Amnesty International said.
- On 15 July 2025, EU foreign ministers gathered in Brussels to consider options for suspending the EU-Israel Association Agreement, but none of the proposed measures received sufficient backing to be implemented.
- They considered ten measures including full suspension, trade and research pillar suspensions, arms embargo, sanctions, visa restrictions, and banning trade with Israeli settlements amid confirmed human rights violations.
- Although an EU review identified Israel's breaches of human rights under the Association Agreement, EU member countries opted to continue the preferential trade arrangement valued at around €1 billion per year.
- The head of Amnesty International strongly criticized the decision as a harsh and illegal betrayal, calling on countries to immediately halt any cooperation that enables Israel’s breaches of international law.
- The unmet suspension drew sharp civil society criticism and was called one of the EU's most disgraceful moments, with risks of complicity rising and the next foreign ministers' meeting set for October 2025.
