EU leaders at a summit in Brussels on June 26 failed to unanimously approve a joint statement of support for Ukraine. The document was supported by 26 member states of the bloc, with only one Hungary opposed.
They did not set a target date without the Hungarian Prime Minister, and they emphasized that the accession process is merit-based.
EU leaders today reaffirmed their continued support for Ukraine on its path to EU membership. In a statement that Hungary did not support, they called for further steps in the accession process after the European Commission assessed that Kiev was ready to open the first set of chapters in accession negotiations.
