EU hits Google with $1 billion fine over its Play app store and search

The Commission said Google self-preferenced its own services and blocked app developers from steering users to cheaper offers, and ordered compliance within 60 days.

  • On Thursday, the European Union fined Google €890 million for violating the Digital Markets Act, citing anticompetitive practices in search results and Play Store restrictions that favored the company's own services over rivals.
  • Following a two-year investigation, the European Commission designated Google as a 'gatekeeper' in September 2023 to regulate digital market competition. The penalty concludes the probe and aims to prevent the company from self-preferencing its own services over third-party rivals.
  • Breaking down the €890 million total, the Commission levied €460 million for 'search abuses' and €430 million for Play Store breaches. Google President of Global Affairs Kent Walker criticized the decision, saying "Regulation should improve products, not make them worse."
  • US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer denounced the penalties as "unreasonable financial penalties," warning they "pose a real risk to the continuation of transatlantic stability with respect to trade." Greer insisted "a real dialogue can only take place during a ceasefire."
  • The fine jeopardizes the 15% tariff cap established in the 2025 Turnberry Agreement as 25 Republican lawmakers urged President Donald Trump on Tuesday to launch trade investigations against the EU's "discriminatory" digital rules, risking escalation.
