On Tuesday, members of the European Parliament (EP) approved a financial support package for farmers facing rising fertilizer costs and shortages.
A large majority of the European Parliament agreed on Tuesday to financial support for farmers affected by the sharply increased prices of fertilizers. The European Commission had proposed this liquidity support to prevent a decline in production or food quality and rising prices for consumers.
On Tuesday, the European Parliament adopted a package of measures aimed at reducing the impact of the increase in fertilizer prices on farmers in the European Union.The new rules allow for greater advances in direct payments and financial support that can cover up to 80% of the additional costs incurred in purchasing fertilisers.
Between December 2025 and April 2026, EU nitrogen fertilizer prices increased by a further 40%, following a previous increase of 62% between 2020 and 2025.
