The EU Parliament voted 358 to 202 to back funding for cross-border abortion access to aid women from countries with restrictive laws, proponents say it reduces unsafe practices.
- Wednesday's vote saw the European Parliament approve a scheme enabling women from restrictive nations to seek free cross-border abortions, as proponents say it improves access.
- Under the European Citizens' Initiative mechanism, the parliamentary vote is advisory only but can influence the European Commission's decision, which will be decided in March.
- Critics, including far-right and centre-right MEPs, say the proposal interferes with national laws, while opponents organised two conferences at the European Parliament to press for maternity support instead.
- After the vote, the European Commission will decide in March whether to adopt the proposal, while in Poland activists praised it and Mateusz Biełudski said it means women avoid risking their lives.
- While Europe has moved to expand access, opponents worked with One of Us and the European Centre for Law and Justice, which litigates on abortion cases and was involved in the US Supreme Court's 2022 overturning of Roe v Wade, Gregor Puppinck said.
