CHINA, JUL 25 – China and the European Union mark 50 years of relations by pledging to enhance trade, investment, and climate cooperation while managing geopolitical and economic challenges.
- In Beijing on Thursday, EU and China held the 50th anniversary summit, marking a key milestone in their relations.
- Despite deep economic links, tensions have risen, as Brussels and China’s export controls on critical rare earths have strained relations, with EU-China ties increasingly fraught.
- At the summit, the press statement said, and both sides also agreed to forge an ‘upgraded version’ of the export control dialogue while issuing a joint statement on climate change.
- Amid these new measures, China’s commerce minister issued ‘solemn representations’ to the EU and warned of ‘a serious negative impact on China-EU economic and trade relations’.
- Highlighting future prospects, China’s high-quality development and CALB’s $2.2-billion plant in Sines will boost cooperation, and Xi said this will create new opportunities.
