Ethiopia Submits Official Bid to Host Afcon 2028
The federation said Ethiopia is seeking its first AFCON since 1976 as the tournament moves to a four-year cycle in 2028.
- On Monday, The Ethiopian Football Federation formally submitted a bid to CAF to host AFCON 2028, seeking to keep the tournament in East Africa following the 2027 event co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
- Ethiopia, which last hosted the continental tournament in 1976, boasts a population of around 130 million and serves as headquarters for the African Union, with its capital at 2,300 metres altitude, the highest in Africa.
- The bid faces significant obstacles, including ongoing insurgencies in the country's two most populous states, Amhara and Oromia, as well as threats of renewed civil war involving the northern Tigray region.
- Separately, Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso expressed interest in co-hosting AFCON 2032, while the tournament will shift to a four-year cycle beginning in 2028 to align with FIFA competitions.
- The Ethiopian team currently ranks 143rd out of 211 by FIFA and last played in the biennial AFCON tournament in 2022, when it was eliminated during the group stage.
