ETA: What is the UK's new travel system and how are dual nationals affected?
- From 25 February 2026, the UK requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for visitors from 85 visa-exempt countries who previously travelled visa-free.
- The UK government introduced the ETA scheme in October 2023 to modernise border checks, delaying strict enforcement to allow traveller adjustment, according to the UK government.
- Applicants must supply contact and passport details plus a suitable photo via the official UK ETA app or UK government website; the application fee is �16 rising to �20, with ETA validity for two years or until passport expiry, permitting stays up to six months.
- With short notice, many say dual nationals cannot obtain an ETA and must use a British passport or pay 589 for a certificate of entitlement, risking travel denial.
- Carriers will check travellers' ETAs using automated systems; over 13.3 million ETAs have been issued since October 2023, and the fee is planned to rise to 20.
