Bus drivers strike over oven-like cabs in heatwave
Unite says more than 1,500 drivers will walk out on 26 dates after cab temperatures topped 40C and safety concerns went unresolved.
More than 1,500 Arriva North London bus drivers started a strike from 4am Friday to 4:30am Saturday due to unsafe hot working conditions during a heatwave, affecting 42 routes including night buses and Superloop services across the TfL network.
The Unite union claims Arriva failed to address repeated complaints about extreme heat inside bus cabs reaching temperatures of 40°C, causing health issues such as heat stroke and dehydration among drivers.
Arriva says it is investing in cab upgrades and improved cooling systems, though most buses currently only have air cooling that reduces the temperature by a few degrees.
TfL warned of little or no service on affected routes during the strike, increased crowding on other transit services, and urged passengers to plan ahead while encouraging dialogue between the parties.
