HENDERSON COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA, JUL 20 – Erick Perez escaped through an unsecured emergency exit door due to a system glitch and was recaptured within days, with officials correcting the security flaw, Henderson County Sheriff’s Office said.
- Erick Perez fled the Henderson County Detention Center on the afternoon of July 17 by exiting through an emergency door that had been left unsecured and then scaling the fence surrounding the facility.
- Perez's escape followed the discovery of the unsecured emergency exit door during a routine supervisory round, and the Sheriff's Office traced the cause to a system glitch that facilitated his escape.
- An immediate headcount confirmed Perez was missing, and he had previously been detained on breaking and entering and larceny offenses; authorities now anticipate additional charges after his recapture.
- According to a Sunday morning Facebook update from the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office, the Fletcher Police Department apprehended Perez and returned him to the Henderson County jail shortly before 6 a.m. that day.
