Ronald De'Souza: Final member of Stockwell Six cleared nearly 50 years after being framed by corrupt officer

GREATER LONDON, ENGLAND, JUL 17 – The Court of Appeal quashed convictions of Errol Campbell and Ronald De Souza, victims of fabricated evidence by corrupt officer Derek Ridgewell, part of 13 overturned cases linked to systemic racism.

  • On Thursday, the Court of Appeal posthumously quashed Errol Campbell’s 1977 theft and conspiracy convictions, overturning the verdict that jailed him.
  • Years ago, the Criminal Cases Review Commission found Det Sgt Derek Ridgewell fabricated evidence, leading to racist miscarriages of justice.
  • Separately on Thursday, the Court of Appeal quashed Ronald De Souza’s conviction, and all 13 referred cases have now been overturned.
  • Assistant Chief Constable Charlie Doyle said `disgusted by Ridgewell’s actions`, and added BTP was `sincerely sorry`.
  • Looking ahead, Matt Foot said he is consulting the Justice Select Committee on reform and proposed automatic reviews of cases overseen by jailed officers.
