Tributes Pour in for ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Star Who Died Following Battle with ALS
Eric Dane died after a 10-month public battle with ALS, becoming a passionate advocate for awareness and research, his family said.
- On Thursday, Eric Dane, aged 53, died following a battle with ALS, his family told People, saying he spent his final days with his wife and two daughters.
- Following that diagnosis, colleagues reached out, with Pompeo recalling a Jan. 24 ALS gala call and Dempsey texting weeks ago, after Dane announced his ALS in April 2025.
- Dane portrayed Mark `McSteamy` Sloan for seven seasons on Grey's Anatomy from 2006 through early 2012, starring alongside Ellen Pompeo, Patrick Dempsey, and Sandra Oh and winning a SAG Award in 2007.
- Leading the tributes, Kevin McKidd posted `Rest in Peace, Buddy` and Sarah Drew shared `Rest in peace`; Dane's family told People they asked for privacy as they grieve and described him as a `passionate advocate for awareness and research`.
- His passing came exactly 20 years after his first Grey's appearance on Feb. 19, 2006, and a mini Grey's reunion had been planned for the 2025 Emmy Awards after his Season 17 cameo in 2021.
