ER Visits For Tick Bites At Highest Level In A Decade: What To Know In MD
CDC data show 71 tick-bite ER visits per 100,000 trips, more than double the seasonal average as warmer weather brings earlier activity.
- On Saturday, emergency room visits for tick bites reached their highest level in nearly a decade, with 71 per 100,000 trips nationally and 163 per 100,000 in the Northeast, according to federal data.
- Warmer temperatures fueled by human-caused climate change are expanding tick ranges and extending their peak season, which now typically runs from March through November rather than the traditional April-to-October window.
- In Pennsylvania, a 14-day average of 223 ticks reported in April is considered high for this time of year. Dr. John Halperin of Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center told ABC News, "There seems to be a clear increase in the number of ticks out there."
- To reduce disease risk, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises wearing long sleeves and using EPA-registered repellents with DEET. Showering within two hours of coming indoors can help wash off unattached ticks.
- Experts advise checking for ticks after outdoor activities, noting that the risk of developing Lyme disease is very low if a tick is removed within 24 hours. Patients should monitor for symptoms for 30 days after a bite.
