Equinix enters into multiple advanced nuclear deals to power data centers
Equinix commits to over 1 GW of advanced nuclear power through multiple agreements including small modular reactors and microreactors to meet rising data center electricity demand.
- On Thursday, Equinix, Inc. entered several advanced nuclear deals, including four with nuclear companies, one solid-oxide fuel cell deal, and preordered 20 Radiant Nuclear microreactors.
- Global electricity demand is growing 4% annually, driven partly by AI-driven data centres, straining utility providers and aging electrical grids.
- The deals will supply more than 1 gigawatt of power, including 500 MW from Oklo and up to 250 MWe from ULC-Energy's Rolls-Royce SMRs in the Netherlands.
- Equinix noted Raouf Abdel said the agreements are part of the company's long-term planning for electricity, not a short-term solution, ensuring stable and sustainable power globally.
- While small modular reactors remain unavailable commercially in the US, the US Department of Energy pilot program selected 11 projects aiming for three reactors to operate within a year, indicating increased industry momentum.
