On 5 June 2025, the President of Equatorial Guinea granted his pardon to 02 South African nationals sentenced to 12 years in prison for drug trafficking. Teodoro Obiang Nguema's decision was made public on the occasion of his 83rd birthday. Peter Huxham and Frederik Potgieter, all 02 mine engineers and oil workers, had been arrested in February 2023 in Malabo as they were about to leave the country.
