Environmentalists’ lawsuit to halt ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ filed in wrong court, Florida official says
COLLIER COUNTY, FLORIDA, JUL 21 – Florida officials contend environmental groups filed the lawsuit in the incorrect federal district, delaying legal review of the Everglades detention center that houses about 900 detainees.
- Last month, environmental groups filed in Florida's southern district, but Collier County is in Florida's middle district, making the venue incorrect.
- Critics decried the facility’s environmental risks, as Paul Schwiep cited 900 detainees sent to `Alligator Alcatraz` in three weeks.
- Amid jurisdictional debate, Paul Schwiep argued the venue was proper, and Schwiep noted many events occurred in Miami-Dade County.
- U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem praised Florida’s initiative to expand detention capacity, and officials defended the project amid jurisdictional disputes.
- Ahead of the June 30 hearing, Judge Williams set a virtual hearing and delayed her ruling until Aug. 6 in Miami.
