Enumclaw songbird rehab sanctuary closes

Featherhaven, a nonprofit songbird rehabilitation sanctuary in Enumclaw, has closed after 12 years of operation, having treated more than 3,500 birds since opening in 2014.
Retirement became necessary as physical and emotional demands of the all-volunteer facility grew, Kelley said. "We simply no longer had the stamina it takes; the heart was willing but that is just not enough in this profession."
Thousands were spent annually on fledgling care, with some birds requiring feeding every fifteen minutes. Volunteers minimized human contact so birds would retain natural instincts and learn species-specific language necessary for survival in the wild.
While focused on songbirds, the sanctuary assisted diverse species, coordinating with partners like the Progressive Animal Welfare Society, Pine Tree Veterinary Hospital, and Raindancer Wild Bird Rescue for complex medical care.
Residents can protect local bird populations by cleaning feeders weekly with weak bleach solution, while the American Bird Conservatory reports cats kill 2.4 billion birds annually, urging owners to keep them indoors.
