The closure cancels mid-July reservations and follows 17 wildfires, a peacetime emergency and Red Flag Warnings in northern Minnesota.
The U.S. Forest Service announced it is closing the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness effective 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, July 14, 2026, to protect visitors and firefighters amid ongoing wildfires and extreme weather conditions.
Lightning strikes on Tuesday lit 21 fires that intensified due to high temperatures and strong winds, prompting Governor Tim Walz to declare a peacetime emergency on Sunday, July 12, and mobilize the Minnesota National Guard.
Rangers are notifying visitors at 1,900 campsites to evacuate, while the Forest Service has automatically processed full refunds for all cancelled reservations through Friday, July 17, with notifications sent via recreation.gov.
Eighteen active wildfires were burning in northeastern Minnesota as of Monday, with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency issuing an air quality alert for Ely and surrounding areas effective Tuesday at 7 a.m. through Thursday at 11 a.m.
Officials warn some areas may remain off-limits for the season despite hopes for a brief closure, as dry storms predicted for Wednesday could bring more lightning and wind while fire officials say no rain is forecast.
