Attack by gunmen leaves at least 40 people dead in Nigeria, the country's president says

  • Gunmen attacked the Zike community in Plateau state, Nigeria, late Sunday night in May 2024.
  • Inter-Communal violence over land resources between farmers and herders has become increasingly common in the region.
  • The gunmen, believed to be predominantly Muslim herders, destroyed homes and shot and hacked victims, including children and the elderly.
  • President Tinubu stated at least 40 people died; however, Andy Yakubu, a local resident, saw bodies, and Samuel Jugo called the assault 'very provocative, vexing and undeserving'.
  • President Tinubu ordered an investigation, but the violence continues despite additional security forces, worsening the sectarian division and claiming 1,336 lives between December 2023 and February 2024.
