Enniscorthy locals assess 'devastating' flood damage
Storm Chandra caused the River Slaney to flood over 350 properties in Enniscorthy and surrounding towns, with many residents evacuated and damages estimated over €50,000 for local businesses.
- On Wednesday, Enniscorthy, County Wexford, was inundated after the River Slaney burst its banks, flooding around 350 properties with waters up to 1.5m.
- With ground already saturated and river levels high, Met Éireann issued a Status Yellow rainfall warning for six counties on Thursday due to flood risks from heavy rain.
- Ralph Swaine, owner of The Bus Stop Shop, reported tens of thousands of euro in losses, with one estimating 100,000 and a garage owner warning of 50,000-60,000 in repairs, while interiors showed a 1.2m tide mark and ruined stock.
- The Department of Social Protection announced an Emergency Response Payment, capped at 20,000, and said some rescue equipment may have been lost or needs replacing, according to Slaney Search and Rescue chairman Shane O'Connor.
- With repeated flooding and a stalled relief scheme, residents criticised late sandbag deployment and red tape, urging Minister James Browne to act on the €55m flood relief scheme approved in 2014.
