UK Pub Opening Rules Tonight as England Play Mexico at 1am
The blanket change lets pubs skip individual applications, and Greene King said more than 600 venues will stay open late.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced on Thursday that pubs across England and Wales may remain open until 5am for Monday's World Cup match against Mexico, eliminating the need for individual venue applications.
England versus Mexico kicks off at 1am Monday morning UK time in the last 16, creating logistical challenges for supporters who must sacrifice sleep to watch the game to its conclusion.
Greene King confirmed over 600 of its 2,600 pubs will stay open late, while a Wetherspoons spokesperson said only five of their 800 pubs will participate in the extended hours.
Tommy Higgs, co-owner of The Three Horseshoes in Witney, Oxfordshire, criticized the extension as "disrespectful" to neighbors and staff, noting many employees hold second jobs incompatible with all-night shifts.
England boss Thomas Tuchel warned his side must "overcome obstacles" as the stadium sits more than 2,200 metres above sea level, though the team remains focused on the high-stakes knockout match.
