Ben Stokes: England Captain Set for Return to Cricket with Durham
England test captain Ben Stokes returned to the XI for Durham against Worcestershire on Friday, marking his first competitive appearance since sustaining a fractured cheekbone during a training session in February.
The 34-year-old sustained a badly broken cheekbone after being struck by a ball during a net session. Following reconstructive facial surgery, specialists gave him the all-clear to return to competitive play.
Stokes opened the bowling for Durham, dismissing South African-born batter Daniel Lategan in his initial spell of four overs at a cost of 14 runs, with wicketkeeper Ollie Robinson holding the catch.
Following disappointing results in the Ashes, England is seeking a new-ball bowler; Stokes, who took 33 wickets throughout 2025, has emerged as an intriguing option for the role.
The captain's form during the County Championship remains a key focus for selectors as England prepares to face New Zealand at Lord's from June 4.
