England, Chelsea defender Millie Bright retires from soccer because of injuries
Chelsea Football Club captain Millie Bright announced her retirement from football at age 32 on Wednesday, effective immediately after playing injured for the last six years.
Joining the Blues in 2015 from Doncaster Belles, Bright made 314 appearances and secured 20 trophies, leaving as the club's longest-serving player and record Super League appearance holder with 216 matches.
Before retiring from international duty, Bright earned 88 caps for England, playing a key role in the Lionesses' 2022 European Championship title and captaining the team to the 2023 World Cup final.
Chelsea confirmed Bright will remain involved as a club ambassador and trustee of their foundation, with the club planning to mark her service during the final Super League match of the season on May 16.
"I'm ready to go into a new era," Bright said, adding she is "ready to say goodbye" to playing; she remains committed to the club, transitioning into her new roles off the pitch.
