England 118-2 After Maiden Phillips Century Helps New Zealand to 391 All Out
Phillips reached 100 off 133 balls as New Zealand added 111 runs for the last three wickets and exposed England’s bowling flaws.
Glenn Phillips scored his maiden Test century on Thursday at The Oval, steering New Zealand to a first-innings total of 391. The all-rounder was last man out for an even 100 runs.
Resuming on 291-7, New Zealand recovered from a precarious position through an 87-run eighth-wicket partnership between Phillips and Kyle Jamieson. Jamieson contributed 41 runs, his highest Test score in six years.
England's bowlers leaked 74 runs in the first hour as Jofra Archer remained sidelined until the 19th over. Part-time spinner Jacob Bethell eventually ended Jamieson's innings, claiming a team-leading three wickets.
In response, England reached 118-2 at tea with opener Emilio Gay scoring 48. Fast bowler Matt Henry then trapped stand-in captain Joe Root and Harry Brook lbw in an 11-minute span.
With New Zealand trailing 1-0 in the three-match series, this performance positions the visitors to challenge England in the second Test. The tourists aim to revitalize their campaign following a difficult start at Lord's.
