Odisha Government Expedites POSH Implementation Across State
BALASORE, ODISHA, JUL 18 – The University Grants Commission and Odisha Crime Branch probe allegations of sexual and mental harassment linked to a student's self-immolation, with accused faculty suspended and in custody.
- A female student set herself on fire on July 12 at Fakir Mohan College in Balasore, Odisha, over inaction against a professor accused of sexual harassment.
- Her self-immolation followed unresolved complaints despite an ICC report advising removal of the accused HoD, while investigations by UGC and Crime Branch were launched.
- The UGC fact-finding team began probing the incident on July 18, inspecting the college and interviewing eight to nine students and staff including ICC members.
- The student suffered 95% burns and died at AIIMS Bhubaneswar on July 14, with police registering an unnatural death case and collecting forensic evidence at the scene.
- Following national outrage, the Odisha government ordered all colleges on July 18 to conduct sensitisation on the POSH Act within three days and display helpline number 181 prominently.
