Energy Firms Unite in Bid to Create UK's First Hydrogen Network
Four energy firms seek about £500 million in government funding to build the UK's first hydrogen network, aiming to cut emissions and create thousands of skilled jobs.
- This year National Gas, Centrica, Equinor and SSE Thermal launched Humber Hydrogen to bid for funding to develop the UK's first regional hydrogen network linking Aldbrough, Easington, Saltend, Immingham and Keadby.
- Because of its geology and industry concentration, the Humber region's geology and industrial concentration plus existing skills make it the natural home for the UK's first hydrogen network, supporting long-held low-carbon industrial cluster plans with billions in planned investment.
- By entering the government's Hydrogen Transport and Storage Business Model, the consortium, including Centrica, highlighted industry support and quoted Martin Scargill, managing director of Centrica Energy Storage + at Centrica stated: "Humber Hydrogen is a major opportunity for the UK to accelerate low carbon economic growth and strengthen its leadership in hydrogen."
- A funding decision is due this year and is expected to total about £500m, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero said the strategy would drive investment and jobs, supported by local MPs and the Humber Energy Board.
- If approved, the network could underpin large-scale hydrogen deployment and link to a national hydrogen transmission network being developed by National Gas, while the consortium plans multibillion-pound investment to sustain the industrial heart of North East England.
