Endangered Sakishima Azalea Blooms Beautifully in Ishigaki City, Okinawa

[Ishigaki] On the 14th, Sakishima Azalea (Ericaceae), which is said to grow wild on Ishigaki Island and Iriomote Island in the prefecture, was spotted blooming with scarlet red flowers in the prefectural Banna Park in Ishigaki City. The flowers, which are about 7cm in diameter, are borne at the end of branches about 3m tall. Each flower has five petals with rounded tips.
