End of an era at Firestone as Senior Players Championship moves to California
Hoag’s sponsorship shift sends the tournament to Newport Beach Country Club and likely ends a 72-year PGA Tour run at Firestone, officials said.
Healthcare company Hoag is taking over as title sponsor and moving the Senior Players Championship from Firestone Country Club to Newport Beach Country Club in California, ending 72 years of PGA Tour presence at the Ohio venue.
Firestone established itself as a premier professional golf destination after opening in 1929, hosting the 1960 PGA Championship and the first big-money event in 1962, the World Series of Golf.
Tiger Woods won a record eight times at Firestone between 1997 and 2007, while Justin Thomas captured the final World Golf Championship there in 2018 before the event moved to Memphis, Tennessee.
The relocation leaves Firestone without PGA Tour events for the first time since 1954, as the Senior Players moves to new March 25-28 dates at Newport Beach Country Club, which has hosted the Hoag Classic since 1996.
Despite losing its marquee tournament, Firestone's leadership emphasizes the club's resilience and looks toward its next 100 years, maintaining focus on its legacy while adapting to life without the Senior Players Championship.
