Adios Jojo Wins 91st Longacres Mile After Disqualification
The three-member stewards panel overturned the result after replay review showed Touchy interfered with Adios Jojo in the stretch.
On Sunday, 32-1 underdog Adios Jojo was elevated to victory in the Longacres Mile after stewards disqualified heavy favorite Touchy for stretch interference, marking the first such disqualification in the race's 91-year history.
Kentucky-Based favorite Touchy led much of the $125,000 race, pouncing at the quarter pole before bumping Adios Jojo, prompting the three-member steward panel to unanimously reverse the order of finish.
Trained by Howie Gibson and owned by Chad Christensen and Josh McKee, Adios Jojo earned $68,750 for the victory, bringing the 4-year-old Oregon-bred gelding's career earnings to $142,821 with his fifth win in 15 starts.
Presiding Steward Vince Funk noted the interference cost Adios Jojo the decision, while jockey Kevin Orozco called the verdict justified. Touchy trainer Wesley Ward stated, "That was a tough one, but that's racing."
Adios Jojo is only the third Oregon-bred winner in the race's history, while trainer Howie Gibson capped a successful Sunday with three wins, including two stakes races, at the Auburn track.
